Can I order OEM machetes with my logo, blade stamping and retail packaging?
Can I order OEM machetes with my logo, blade stamping and retail packaging?
Yes, and most Chinese machete plants do it every week. The real question is which branding method fits your price point and volume.
A logo on a blade is not one process. It is at least four processes, with different tooling costs and different lifespans in the field.
Packaging follows the same logic. A bundle for a farm supply wholesaler looks nothing like a printed box for a hardware chain.
This guide explains each option, the MOQ behind it, and the artwork you need to prepare before the first sample.

How are logos applied: etching, laser or stamping?
Etching uses a stencil and an electric current, or an acid bath, to burn the mark into the surface.
Tooling is cheap, often a one-off stencil fee. The mark is shallow but permanent, and it survives years of use.
Etching suits low and mid volumes, and it handles curved blade faces well. Most private label machetes use this method.
Laser engraving burns a fine line with a focused beam. It gives sharp detail, small text, dates and serial numbers.
Per-piece cost is higher than etching, and tooling is close to zero because the file is digital. That makes laser good for short runs.
Laser marks can fade in polished areas after heavy sharpening, so keep them away from the bevel.
Hot stamping, or die stamping, presses a steel die into the blade. The mark is deep and lasts as long as the blade.
Tooling is the expensive part, usually a few hundred dollars per die. Output is fast, so cost per piece drops at high volume.
Never let a supplier stamp too close to the edge or the tang. A deep mark in a hard blade can start a crack.
Printed logos are the cheapest and the weakest. They rub off with sweat and oil, and buyers complain about it.

Which packaging suits retail versus bulk markets?
Bulk packing is for distributors, plantations and tender supply. Blades are oiled, wrapped in paper and bundled.
A bundle usually holds ten to twenty pieces, tied with strap and packed in a strong carton. No printing is needed.
This is the lowest cost per unit, and it protects blades well if the carton is lined.
Retail packing is about shelf appeal. A printed colour box with a window, or a hanging blister card, sells the tool.
A poly bag with a printed header card is the middle option. It is cheap, hangs on a peg and shows the brand clearly.
For hardware chains, ask for a display carton that converts into a shelf tray. Stores order more when the carton merchandises itself.
Include a small leaflet with use and sharpening tips. It reduces returns and makes the product feel finished.
Check carton strength, because a weak box crushes in a container and the retailer rejects the lot.
Ask for a drop test on one packed carton. One metre, six faces, onto concrete. Split boxes mean a rejected load.
Add a moisture barrier for sea freight. A poly liner inside the carton keeps humid air away from oiled blades.
Open and close one retail box by hand. Flimsy board shows up in seconds, before you pay for a print run.

What MOQ applies to each custom element?
Each custom element carries its own minimum, and they do not always match.
A logo etched on a stock model is the easiest. Many plants accept 1,000 to 2,000 pieces per logo.
A custom blade profile needs new dies and a trial run. Expect 3,000 to 6,000 pieces as a starting point.
A custom handle colour or shape adds its own minimum, because moulds and jigs are involved.
Printed cartons are ordered separately, and printers often set a minimum of 500 to 1,000 boxes per design.
A custom sheath, especially leather, has the highest minimum. Stitching setups favour runs of 2,000 pieces and up.
Mix rules matter too. You can often split one order across two or three models, if the total meets the plant's minimum.
Ask for the rule in writing. "MOQ 3,000 pieces, mixable across stock models" is clear. "MOQ negotiable" is not.

What artwork should you send?
Send vector files, never a screenshot. AI, PDF or EPS keeps the lines clean at any size.
Convert text to outlines, and keep the mark to one colour if you can. Two colours mean two passes and more cost.
State the position and size in millimetres. Say whether the mark sits on the blade face, the spine or the handle.
Very fine lines disappear on a blasted or black oxide surface. Ask the supplier for the minimum line width they can hold.
Request a branding sample on the actual finish before production. A proof on paper tells you nothing about steel.
If your brand is registered, send the trademark certificate and a short authorisation letter. Plants refuse marks they cannot verify.
For tender or aid supply, add the batch number, production date and buyer reference. Etched or laser marks both work.
OEM RFQ checklist
Send this list with your artwork and ask for a quote line by line.
Model number and blade drawing with dimensions
Branding method: etch, laser, stamp or print
Artwork file in vector format, with position and size in mm
Handle branding: laser, hot stamp or metal medallion
Sheath branding: emboss, print or none
Packing type: bundle, poly bag, header card, colour box or blister
Printed carton artwork and carton dimensions
Units per carton and per bundle
MOQ for the blade, the logo and the packaging, quoted separately
Tooling cost and whether it is one-off or per order
Sample lead time and bulk lead time with tooling included
Trademark certificate and authorisation letter on file
Clear artwork and clear minimums turn a custom project into a normal order. Vague files turn it into three months of samples.
