What is the MOQ for private-label machetes, and can I mix models?
Minimum order quantity is the last gate before a first order. It stops more deals than price does.
The number is rarely a single figure. It depends on which part of the product you are changing.
A logo on a stock blade and a new blade profile are very different requests for a factory.
This guide explains the minimums behind each element, how mixing works, and how to structure a trial order that does not cost a fortune.

What MOQ applies to stock models versus custom blades?
A stock model with your logo is the easiest order. Logo minimums commonly land between 1,000 and 2,000 pieces.
Some accept 500 pieces with a small surcharge, especially in low season.
A custom blade profile needs a new die set and a trial run. Plan on a first run of 3,000 to 6,000 pieces.
A custom handle shape adds mould or jig cost, and minimums often start around 5,000 pieces.
Changing the handle material is easier than changing its shape. A different wood or plastic colour is usually a smaller step.
Printed retail packaging carries its own minimum. Carton printers commonly ask for 500 to 1,000 boxes per design.
Custom sheaths have high minimums too, because cutting and stitching setups want volume. Leather often starts near 2,000 pieces.
Small parts add up. A custom rivet or a branded medallion can block a small order.
Always ask for the MOQ per element, quoted separately. A single blended number hides the real constraint.

Can sizes and handles be mixed in one container?
Mixing is normal in this trade, and most plants allow it within limits.
The usual rule is a total quantity per order, with a minimum per model or per variant.
For example, 3,000 pieces total, with at least 500 pieces per model. Ask for the exact rule in writing.
Handles can usually be mixed if they belong to the same blade model. Blade models can be mixed if they share the same steel and thickness.
What blocks mixing is tooling. Two custom blade profiles mean two die sets, so the minimum applies to each.
Packing adds a limit. Each retail design needs its own carton printing, so each design carries a carton minimum.
Colour mixing is easy for plastic handles and harder for wood, where finish batches vary.
Ask how the factory counts a mixed order. Some count total pieces, others count pieces per model.
Get the loading plan too. Mixed cartons of different sizes waste container space if nobody plans the stack.

How should a first trial order be structured?
A trial order has one job: prove the supplier can repeat the spec. Keep it small but not tiny.
Five hundred to one thousand pieces is a sensible range for a first order on a stock model.
Choose one or two models, not six. You want a clear read on quality, not a catalogue.
Include at least one custom element, such as your logo, so you test the branding process too.
Ask for pre-production samples first, then approve them in writing before the run starts.
Keep the trial order specification identical to what you plan for bulk. Changing spec later resets the learning.
Book an inspection on the trial order. It costs little and sets the standard for future shipments.
Pay attention to packing quality, because that is where small factories often fail.
Treat the trial as a paid audit. If it goes well, the second order is where volume discounts begin.
Ask for the price of the next volume band in writing, so the trial leads somewhere.
Keep the trial packing simple, then upgrade once reorders begin.
Some plants accept a mixed trial across two models if the total meets the minimum.
Confirm who pays the tooling and who owns it if you move to another supplier.
Agree the inspection standard on the trial, then reuse it on every order after that.
Ask for a sample of the export carton as well as the blade. Packing is part of the product.
How can a buyer negotiate the MOQ down?
You can lower the minimum by lowering the factory's setup risk, not by pushing harder.
Offer to pay the tooling cost separately. A plant that recovers the die cost can accept a smaller first run.
Accept stock handles and standard packing on the first order. Customise later, once volume exists.
Combine your first order with a model the factory already runs for other buyers.
Give a twelve month forecast with quarterly volumes. Forecasts reduce the risk of a small first order.
Ask about low season windows. Factories fill capacity gaps with smaller runs at better terms.
Split the order across two models instead of one, if it helps the plant balance its line.
Never accept a lower MOQ by dropping the hardness requirement or the tang design. That is not a discount.
Get any reduced minimum in writing, with the surcharge stated clearly.
MOQ RFQ checklist
Ask for each line separately, because the answer differs by element.
MOQ for a stock model with no logo
MOQ for a stock model with an etched or laser logo
MOQ for a custom blade profile
MOQ for a custom handle shape or colour
MOQ for printed retail packaging
MOQ for a custom sheath
Total order minimum and minimum per model
Mix rules for models, sizes and handles
Tooling cost and who owns the tooling
Surcharge for orders below MOQ
Sample and production lead time at that volume
Packing and carton minimum per design
MOQ is a setup cost in disguise. Pay the setup once, prove the quality, then grow the volume on better terms.
