Boot Factory or Trading Company: 6 Checks Before You Pay

Boot Factory or Trading Company: 6 Checks Before You Pay

Almost every supplier you contact will call itself a factory. Some own the machines. Some own a phone and a freight forwarder.

Both can be legitimate. The problem starts when you pay factory prices for trader service, or expect factory control from a trader.

These six checks tell you which one you are dealing with.

Which documents expose a trading company?

Ask for the business licence photo. Look at the scope line at the bottom of the page.

A manufacturer lists production of rubber footwear, plastic footwear or safety shoes.

A trading company lists sales of footwear, import and export, or supply chain services.

Both are legal. But only one carries the liability for the compound inside your boots.

Next, ask for the factory address and the licence address. They should match.

If they differ, ask which building holds the moulding line. A vague answer is your first warning.

Then ask for the export licence number. Ask which customs office the goods clear through.

A real plant answers quickly, because these documents sit in the same drawer.

How do you verify moulding and assembly lines exist?

Never accept a PDF with machine photos. Ask for a live video call, scheduled during working hours.

Ask the salesperson to start at the raw material store. You want to see bags with grade labels.

Then ask for the mixer. A gumboot factory without a mixer buys compound from outside.

Next, ask for the moulding line running. Count the moulds. Ask how many pairs one mould cycle produces.

Ask to see the mould store. Rows of aluminium or steel moulds are hard to fake.

For safety boots, ask to see the cutting table, the stitching line and the sole injection machine.

Ask to see the toe cap cartons. Ask who supplies the caps and what impact rating they carry.

Then ask for the test bench. Let them show a flexing test or a water tank check on camera.

If the picture freezes every time you ask for a machine, you have your answer.

What must a video tour and a technical call show?

A credible tour has a fixed route and no cuts. Ask them to keep the camera running.

Route: gate, licence board, material store, mixing area, moulding line, trimming, assembly, packing, warehouse.

At each stop, ask one specific question. A person standing in the plant answers in seconds.

A person forwarding your message to a third party goes quiet, then replies the next day.

Ask the camera to show a clock, a calendar or a production board with today's date.

Ask to open one carton from an order in production. Look at the label and the poly bag print.

Ask what the current output is per day, and which line is running your model.

Then compare this with their quotation lead time. Numbers should be consistent.

A tour is easy to stage. A conversation about process is not. Traders are thin on process detail.

So finish the tour with five technical questions. They are the cheapest verification you can run.

Ask what temperature the compound reaches before moulding. Ask what hardness the sole should be.

Ask what causes whitening on a PVC shaft after two winters.

A factory mentions plasticiser migration, compound ratio or storage heat. A trader mentions quality control.

Ask what they do when a batch fails the water test. A factory describes rework or scrap.

Ask how they control shaft height on a knee boot. A factory talks about mould trimming and gauges.

Ask for the name of the compound supplier. Ask if they will put it in the purchase order.

These questions cost nothing and save deposits.

One last check: ask for a photo of the mould with the model number stamped on the side.

Every plant marks its moulds. A trader has to ask someone else for that photo, and the delay shows.

When is a trading company the better choice?

Plenty of buyers work happily with traders, and for good reason.

Traders handle mixed containers. They combine boots, socks, insoles and packaging in one shipment.

They are useful for small trial orders below factory MOQ. They absorb the awkward first run.

They often communicate faster and speak better English than a plant manager.

They can also hold stock, which shortens your replenishment time.

A good trader also quotes new models faster, because it talks to several plants every week.

The rule is simple. Pay trader prices for trader service, and inspect harder.

Ask the trader which factory will produce your order. Put that name in the contract.

Do not accept a trading company's own test report as proof. Ask for the third-party report in your brand name.

Write the compound, class and packing into the contract, whoever signs it.

Questions to send before you pay a deposit

Send this list and ask for written answers, not a call.

  • Business licence photo and registered address

  • Factory address if different, with the building that holds the lines

  • Number of moulding lines and moulds per height

  • Daily output per line, in pairs

  • Compound source and whether it is mixed in-house

  • Toe cap supplier and impact rating

  • In-house test equipment list

  • Third-party test reports with lab name and date

  • Current main export markets

  • Two shipment references in your region

  • Sample lead time and bulk lead time

  • Payment terms and inspection policy

Score each answer out of two. Anything under fourteen out of twenty-four needs a video walk before you talk price.
